Kanaky

Kanaky (also written Kanakie ) is the name given to New Caledonia by the independence movement since the 1970s , and derives from the Hawaiian word kanaka (meaning “man”) .

The term was coined by Roselène Dousset-Leenhardt, the daughter of pastor Maurice Leenhardt. The name "Kanak" now refers to the Melanesians of this archipelago. After the creation of the Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) on 24, the active boycott of the territorial elections of 1984territorial elections of the following 18 November and the entry into the period known as the "Events" (1984-1988), the independentists chose to obtain independence by force and created certain institutions and symbols which were to serve as the basis for the future State called "Kanaky".
